The Graveyard Boulevard is a rock ‘n’ roll band from North Carolina that prowls the dark fringes of punk and metal. Drawing inspiration from supernatural tales, monster movies, and suspenseful books, the band has released six full-length albums since 2003 and continues to be active – performing, writing, and recording new material. Since the band’s inception, Abby Normal has been primary songwriter for the band and is the only remaining original member.
The early days of the band spawned raw punk (and low budget) tunes, often with lyrics inspirited by indie horror films. Many of those tracks can be found on streaming services as a digital album called Monster Melodies. It collected songs from Toe Tags & Body Bags (2003) and Dead City Radio (2006). In 2009, the Rock Scars album was released, and it was the final album to feature collaborative work of Sicko Zero and Seaweed, founding members of Graveyard Boulevard and The Frankenstein Drag Queens From Planet 13.
By 2011, the Graveyard Boulevard had matured into a band striving for better performances and production. The band had found its stride with Scott “Scurvy” Cannon (bass guitar), Johnny Walsh (drums), Abby Normal (guitar/vocals), and the invaluable collaboration with producer, Rob Tavaglione at Catalyst Recording. That year saw the release of a full-length album called O.G.R.E. (Organization of Generally Rotten Enterprises) on Horror High Records, an indie record label that had also released music from The Death Riders, featuring Blasco from Rob Zombie’s and Ozzy Osbourne’s bands. The Graveyard Boulevard’s tenacious efforts were acknowledged at Charlotte’s Queen City Awards in 2012 and 2013 when the band took home back-to-back awards for Best Rock Band Of The Year.
A digital EP called What Doesn’t Kill Me Only Makes Me Laugh was released in 2014 and the band continued supporting the growing library of songs with many adventurous weekends touring the eastern U.S. In 2019, the full-length album Subhuman Stage was released, followed by Will Will Wither in 2022. Most of the songs on Will Will Wither were written during the pandemic of 2020-2021 and reflect many of the difficult issues the world was struggling with at the time. The album also wrapped up another chapter in the band’s history as it included the final Graveyard Boulevard recordings featuring Sicko Zero, Scott Cannon, and Trey Spears.
New singles are currently being written and recorded with Abby Normal (vocals/guitar), Bryon Bates (bass), Justin Glenn (drums), and Michael Shook (guitar).
Former members: Sicko Zero, Scott “Scurvy” Cannon, John Walsh, Trey Spears, Robby “Seaweed” McGalliard, Clay Higgins
Fun fact: Founding member, Ray Franks started using the stage name “Abby Normal” in the 1990’s while performing with the horror punk band, The Frankenstein Drag Queens From Planet 13. The stage name is obviously borrowed from the classic Mel Brooks comedy-horror, Young Frankenstein. Prior the FDQ, Abby was also in Maniac Spider Trash. Songs from both those early bands can also be found online.
Most of the band’s library of songs can be found on popular streaming services, including Spotify, Amazon, Apple Music, and YouTube.
